Biblical Typology

Often times when we read the Scriptures, we come away with a pretty good understanding of the main point: Abraham is saved by faith, Moses and Israel are delivered by God from Egypt, David is the King after God’s own heart. Perhaps, when we’re careful, we even see the deeper, more nuanced realities that these examples point to: Faith alone saves, God is the redeemer of his people, and Christ is the eternal King on the throne.

But perhaps you’ve often thought you were missing some of the details. Perhaps you’ve wondered why certain passages and words are even in Scripture. Typology helps us to understand the “why” in many such cases. It reveals hints of the bigger picture that is to come in Christ and in his work of redemption.

As Geerhardus Vos wrote, “Let us not forget, however, that as of all theology, so of Biblical Theology, the highest aim cannot lie in man, or in anything that serves the creature. Its most excellent practical use is surely this, that it grants us a new vision of the glory of Him who has made all things to the praise of His own wonderful name”.
