Commentary

In these verses, the scribes — teachers and interpreters of the Law — come down from Jerusalem and accuse Jesus of being possessed by Beelzebub, a name that can be understood as referring to Satan himself. While the scribes claim to speak with authority about the Law, Jesus possesses authority over the Law. The name Beelzebub has an interesting background: the form Beelzebul is likely related to the Old Testament Baal‑zebub and can carry the sense of “master of the house.” Even as the scribes implicitly acknowledge Jesus’ undeniable power, they attribute it to Satan rather than to God.

Jesus’ response, expressed through two brief parables, exposes the incoherence of their accusation. First, he asks, “How can Satan cast out Satan?” If the satanic realm were internally divided, it could not stand (vv. 24–26). Second, he explains that one must bind the strong man before plundering his house (v. 27). In other words, Satan’s dominion must be overcome before his captives can be freed.

Matthew 12:29 makes this explicit: Jesus casts out demons because he has already bound Satan. Beginning with Jesus’ victory over Satan in the wilderness temptation (Matt. 4:1–11), Jesus demonstrates that Satan is powerless to prevent the advance of the kingdom of God.

In verses 28–30, Jesus teaches that all sins may be forgiven except the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. His point is that his substitutionary atonement covers the sins of all who believe. But if a person persistently attributes to Satan what is accomplished by the Spirit of God — if one makes a deliberate, willful, decisive judgment that the Spirit’s testimony about Jesus is demonic — then such a person places himself beyond forgiveness. This is not because God is unwilling to forgive, but because the person has hardened himself against the only source of forgiveness.

Following this confrontation with the scribes, Jesus is approached by his family, who still do not understand his mission or what it means to follow him. In the midst of his teaching, his mother and brothers call for him. When the crowd informs Jesus, “Your mother and brothers are looking for you,” he responds, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” He then explains that whoever does the will of God is his true brother, sister, and mother. Jesus is not rejecting his earthly family; rather, he emphasizes the priority of the messianic community of faith (cf. Exod. 32:25–29) as the defining family of God.

Jesus shows us that real spiritual power is never chaotic or dark — it always brings freedom, clarity, and life. The scribes tried to explain away what Jesus was doing, but their hearts were so closed that they couldn’t recognize God’s work even when it was right in front of them. And when Jesus talks about his true family, he’s teaching us that belonging to him isn’t about who you’re related to, but about trusting him and doing what he says. In the end, this whole passage invites us to see clearly, listen carefully, and stay close to Jesus so we can recognize his work and be part of his family.
