Scripture Reading:
#1. In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” (Isaiah 6:1-3)
#2. We have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. (2 Cor. 4:7-10)
Prayer of Praise to God: Refer to the verses above and hymn below.
1 The sands of time are sinking;
the dawn of heaven breaks;
the summer morn I've sighed for,
the fair sweet morn awakes;
dark, dark has been the midnight,
but dayspring is at hand,
and glory, glory dwelleth
in Emmanuel's land.
2 The King there in His beauty
without a veil is seen;
it were a well-spent journey,
though trials lay between:
the Lamb with His fair army
on Zion's mountain stands,
and glory, glory dwelleth
in Emmanuel's land.
3 O Christ, He is the fountain,
the deep, sweet well of love!
The streams on earth I've tasted;
more deep I'll drink above:
there to an ocean fullness
His mercy doth expand,
and glory, glory dwelleth
in Emmanuel's land.
4 The bride eyes not her garment,
but her dear bridegroom's face;
I will not gaze at glory,
but on my King of grace;
not at the crown He giveth,
but on His piercéd hands;
the Lamb is all the glory
of Emmanuel's land.
Reading of the Law: Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. For “Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” (1 Peter.3:8-12).
Silent Confession of Sin/Confession of Sin: We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. There is no one who calls upon your name, who rouses himself to take hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us, and have made us melt in the hand of our iniquities. But now, O LORD, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand. Be not so terribly angry, O LORD, and remember not iniquity forever. Behold, please look, we are all your people.
Reading of the Gospel: I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Gal. 2:20)

Question #86
Q. Since we have been delivered from our misery by grace through Christ without any merit of our own, why then should we do good works?
A. Because Christ, having redeemed us by his blood, is also restoring us by his Spirit into his image, so that with our whole lives we may show that we are thankful to God for his benefits, so that he may be praised through us, so that we may be assured of our faith by its fruits, and so that by our godly living our neighbors may be won over to Christ.
Question #87
Q. Can those be saved who do not turn to God from their ungrateful and unrepentant ways?
A. By no means. Scripture tells us that no unchaste person, no idolater, adulterer, thief, no covetous person, no drunkard, slanderer, robber, or the like will inherit the kingdom of God.
Prayer of Thanksgiving: Thank God for the faith we have, even though it may be small, it is still a gift from God. Thank him also for the love that he shows his people not based on what we do but what his Son has done for us.
Prayer of Supplication: Ask God to change the hearts of our civil servants so they could turn and be saved and that they would revere his laws for our land.
Bible reading and commentary:
Read: 1 Corinthians 16:13-18
In verses 13-18, Paul gives his final instructions to the Corinthian Christians. He exhorts them to persevere in faith and love and to submit to the godly leaders appointed over them. In chapter 16:13-14 Paul gives a concise summary of Christian ethics. In the face of Satan’s relentless attacks, Christian “soldiers” must remain armed for battle by being vigilant, firm in their faith, full of courage, strong of spirit, and motivated by love.
Likewise, Paul’s warm commendation of the household of Stephanas gives commentators one last opportunity to articulate the qualities of Christian leadership and respect those leaders deserve. The fact that Paul praises the household of Stephanas for being “devoted to the service of the saints” has nothing to do with the Catholic misunderstanding of saints, but illustrates that all Christian believers, whether they be princes or paupers, are the “saints” of God in need of pastoral care. Finally, several commentators point out the various intense emotions that Paul displays in this passage and throughout his writings – clear proof that Christian life and ministry does not require a kind of Stoic indifference, but engages in the full spectrum of human feelings, including joy and sadness, hopefulness and disappointment.
Luther comments: True fellowship is divine and heavenly; it is the noblest, surpassing copper or lead; it is the communion of saints, in which we all are brothers and sisters, so near to one another that greater nearness could never be conceived. For there is one baptism, one Christ, one sacrament, one meal, one gospel, one faith, one Spirit, one spiritual body, and each one is a member of the other; no other brotherhood is so deep and close.
But if you say, “Unless I get something through the fellowship, of what use is it?” The answer is, “You serve the community and other peoples as love does, you will have your reward without any seeking or desiring of it.” Love serves freely, which is why God in return also gives to it every blessing, freely and without charge. Because all things must be done in love if they are to be well pleasing to God, the community must also be in love. Yet what is done in love can by its nature not seek its own; instead it seeks the benefit of others; and especially the congregation. As you find your trust in Christ and his dear saints growing in strength, your certainty grows of their love toward you, and how they will stand by you in all the troubles of life and death. Therefore your love goes out to each one and you desire to help everyone, hate no one, suffer with all, and pray for all. Again, if you take to heart the shortcomings and lapses of all Christians and of the whole church, or the fall of anyone , and your love is given to them all, so that you would readily help anyone, hate no one, sympathize with all, and pray for them, then all is well. This rather long quote comes from Luther’s Works titled The Sacrament of the Body of Christ. LW 35:70, 72
John Owen on biblical love: Take but this one word [love] to discover to you whether you walk in your obedience under a sense of the constraining power of Christ; it comprehends all others: “His commandments are not grievous.” (1 John 5:3). When a soul works out of love, what it does is not grievous. And the inward and outward commands of Christ will be grievous to all that are not under the constraining power and efficacy of His love.
Closing Hymn: The Gloria Patri
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Amen.
Closing Scripture: Let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God (Heb. 13:15-16).
The Lord’s Prayer (together): Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
